Whilst I sit here, slightly intoxicated, as Lachlan attempts to explain Open ID to Cameron and wondering why the tequila bottle is empty, it seems a good a time as any to post a little something about the twisted adventure that was WebJam 2. Also, Cam needs Baileys, someone send the man some milk-based liquor.

Lachlan and Anson did a brilliant job of putting together the event. I wasn’t able to make it last time, but I was never going to miss version 2. Cameron and I presented last and unveiled a little something we call Tim Would Lick It. Working with Cam was pure hell, something I’ll never consider again — except for the fact that I fear his JavaScript-powered wrath. Our little joke on Tim was well received. So well received in-fact, that we came second — and in doing so, won a ticket to Web Directions! Woooh!

As I watch Lachlan fetch some Scotch and wonder how much fun BarCamp with a hang over is going to be tomorrow, I must remind all challengers — Team Stoopid takes no prisoners!

Last week I had to make one of the hardest decisions I’ve ever faced — to leave a job I truly enjoy and move away from the area I’ve called home for my entire life. The process feels a little like pressing the ‘reset’ button on my life; while I will stay in contact with friends here in Queensland and I have friends where I’m moving, everything else will be completely different. Crazy.

The past two years at Griffith have been brilliant. I’ve learnt an incredible amount and will always be grateful for that opportunity. The team I’m leaving behind are fun, smart and supportive people; all of whom I’m proud to call friends. Between daily games of hacky-sack and countless office pranks, the people I work with made every day enjoyable; regardless of pressing deadlines, demanding clients or anything else that may have reared its ugly head. Despite this, the time had come to mix things up a bit, tackle new challenges and seek out new experiences.

So what has tempted me to step out into the unknown? An opportunity to that was too good to pass up; an opportunity to be immersed in cutting edge web technologies, working with great people for a company that totally Get It. As of the 15th of November, I will be joining SitePoint as a technical editor. To quote an Australian quasi icon, I’m Excited!.

If you’ve got any tips, hints or general advice for someone moving to Melbourne (inc. a good removalist company — I’ve got to get my bonsai down there :-/), I’d be grateful if you leave them in a comment.

Wow, I’ve certainly neglected this site of late. On the web design front, I’ve finally made some headway into version 2 of Left Justified - hooray! Even though the pixel pushing is nearly complete, the new design won’t be unveiled until the New Year due to all the backend changes I have planned. Lots of little intricacies to make my life easier, such as server side XSL for the templates and finally adding a front end to the database which runs the folio section so I don't have to use phpMyAdmin to make additions --- something which has been putting me off from updating the folio for months. Bad developer! Bad! ;-)

In other news, I’ve been hired as a multimedia developer (what does that title even mean anymore?) for Griffith University; and after 2 weeks I can honestly say I’d be happy to stay here for years. Most of my work is XHTML/CSS, with lots of variation in the form of pixel pushing, animations and ‘interactives’ in Flash and Director. Besides all the great people I’m working with, the best part is that I don’t have to be an agent of change — the decision makers are already aware of the advantages of semantic, accessible code combined with CSS.

It hasn’t been all good news though, a large project I was working on turned sour after the client broke the contract on a couple of occasions. We’ve put it on hiatus until early next year to give the client more time to finalise decisions on their end; hopefully the beautiful site I’ve already designed will see the light of day, otherwise I may just release the design as a free template. We’ll have to wait and see…
