FeedsA Doctype is not a badge

A doctype will not save the world.
A doctype will not fight world hunger.
A doctype will not help you sleep at night.
A doctype will not ensure fame, fortune, or success.
A doctype does not give you a moral or technical high ground from which to shout down at others.
A doctype is not a badge.

Well in that case, I’m not using it anymore …Especially if “A doctype does not give you a moral or technical high ground from which to shout down at others”
It took me an hour of reading to get to the end of that thread and be sure about your point. It might just have been worth it.
A doctype may very well be none of those things, however it’s still pretty useful …
One of the reasons I think using XHTML is good (especially 1.1 with the correct MIME type) is that it forces people not write such lazy and incorrect code. Nice, clean tight code is much better for everyone.
However, I come from a strong application programming background so if you write the wrong code, it just doesn’t work. The compiler doesn’t guess and try and figure out what you were really trying to do. So that is why I feel having browsers that do that isn’t a good thing.
there’s all sorts of things you can tell about someone through interpretation of their doctype… oh wait… i suppose it’s a bit like a badge!
I don’t see what the big deal is. I just pick HTML 4.01 or XHTML randomly depending on how I feel on the particular day, but often go for HTML 4.01 because it is slightly quicker to markup to a ’strict’ level that is must.
Who are you people and what are you talking about?
