Ain’t Nothin’ but a Meme Thing

Total volume of music on my computer
0MB. Yes, none. I’m writing this from work and ripping CD’s to the HDD is against Australia’s antiquated ‘fair use’ provisions – therefore it is against company policy also. The situation at home is almost identical, as I prefer to listen to the stereo than to PC speakers or headphones.
Last CD I purchased
‘The Roots – Come Alive’ and ‘Talvin Singh – Back to Mine’. Both a little disappointing to be perfectly honest, but I’m a fan of both acts so I’ll get over it.
Playing right now
‘Cornelius – Smoke’ from the album, ‘Point’.
Five songs that mean a lot to me
- Stanley Clarke – ‘Life is just a game’ : from his phenomenal 1976 album School Days. This is without doubt my favourite composition of all time.
- Mr Bungle – ‘Ma Meeshka Mow Skowz’ from Disco Volante. Completely insane. Absolutely perfect. These guys will always be prominent figures in my ‘favourite live shows’ list and this song is one of the primary reasons.
- Aphex Twin – ‘Come to Daddy’. There are other Aphex tracks that I prefer, but this is the one that opened my eyes to the genre. Oh yeah, and that video clip is still scary as hell!
- Miles Davis – ‘All Blues’. I play guitar, and as a result I loath the battered ’12 bar blues’ format. While this track follows that structure, it’s so undeniably beautiful that I have to add it to this list. Have a listen.
- The Roots – ‘Swept Away’ from ‘Do you want more?’ One damn fine piece of atmospheric hip-hop.
Five people whose brains I would like to absorb to whom I am passing the musical baton
- Ryan Parman — Ryan seems to be a big fan of computer powered entertainment gadgets; so what’s he listening to?
- Brothercake — Bro’cake loves music. Whether or not he will divert from the usual work focus of his site to respond is yet to be seen.
- Anne Van Kesteren — Anne takes blogging too seriously, so let’s see if I can lead him off-topic
- Mark Wubben — Another code monkey extraordinaire. Much like Brothercake and Ryan, Mark is known primarily for his JS talents (sIFR).
Jan BrasnaD’oh! Not only has Jan already done this, but he passed me the baton too!- Ben Buchanan a fellow Brisbanite, co-worker (cow-orker
) and standards junkie.
Ryan Parman:
Well, I must say that I’m flattered. I’m pretty much a music junkie, so this should be fun. There shall soon be a response over at Skyzyx.com.
Ryan Parman:
Whoa… that time zone thing really messes me up. It’s just past midnight here, and I’m getting ready to go to bed from the long day I just had, and you’re probably sitting down to have dinner about now… a day after me.
*Shudders* Wierd. Sorry, looking at my previous comment’s timestamp kinda threw me for a loop there.
Rimantas:
This is good to know I am not alone with zero MB of music in my PC
Selfgratification:
Meme me up, Scotty!
… or “That Musical Baton Thing.”
I’ve been seeing a few of these around the place over the past few days, and now I have been passed a musical baton by Matt. So here we go:
Total volume of music files on my computer:
8.06GB…
Johan:
I recently wired my PC into the stereo system. Best of both worlds, and a piece of cake.
ben buchanan:
i can give up standards anytime i want. i just don’t want to!
you know, i think i’m going to have to post an abridged reply
a) since it’s turned into an essay, and
b) some industrial band names are indefinably NSFW, so to speak…
Ryan Parman:
*Pwang*
Geoffrey Sneddon:
Ooooo! Lemme have join in
ben buchanan:
in the interests of posterity, ease of reference and a slight hint of Why Not… musical batons are the new black.
ben buchanan:
btw, if you like mr bungle, check out darth vegas…
Jon:
Back in good ol Norway, we are allowed to break copyright protections for personal use, and also I think it is allowed to copy things for personal use, but it is not allowed to be the distributor of any pirated stuff. A resent propose to change that got voted down, and good is that. Just letting u know…
Oliver Charles:
Woohooo! Go Mr. Bungle!
Also, thats some other good music – shame about those Australian rights though, I much prefer all my music in one central place without having the hassle of loading CDs in
Sara:
Hey Andrew. I found this site through your comment on Deano’s blog. But I believe I know you from SP. Perhaps at least..
anyway, I have 0 mb on my computer too b/c i just moved about 55 GB onto an external harddrive I recently acquired. It’s a good thing
.
Since I’m a first-time visitor.. just had to say, I dig your layout. Pretty sweet. I’ll be sure to check it out every few days.
jeff_smith:
