Don’t forget to PING!

| May 9, 2005 | Category: Web Nerdery

This is a call to the bloggers out there, Don’t forget to ping when you post!.
I rely on blo.gs to tell me when my favourite blogs have been updated. If you don’t ping ping-o-matic, blo.gs doesn’t get pinged and I (and many others) know nothing of your fresh content. The primary offenders I’m thinking of here are Shaun, Colly and Cameron; three individuals whose webby prose I greatly enjoy, but whose sites I’m sick of hitting on a weekly basis to check for new content.

If you’re in doubt as to whether your own site is pinging the waiting world, sign up for an account with blo.gs and bloglines and subscribe to your own site. Pretty easy, eh?

    Absolutely, couldn’t agree more.

Over the years I’ve sent my fair share of gentle reminders to some on my blogroll, but if blo.gs just interpreted sites’ RSS to provide the same service…

Again, the blo.gs sidebar is the best way to view sites with *actual* content. For linkblogs a feedreader suffices, but it’s nice to view the content in its context, y’know?

Ah, it’s all down to me reworking my site sections a while ago. Blo.gs is still picking up my old sections - I’ll force it to see the new ones - you may have to search for a new CollyLogic reference. To be honest, I find Blo.gs a bit flaky when it comes to change.

I swear by Bloglines myself - never lets me down (apart from Cameron’s feed - c’mon Cameron).

Normal service will soon be resumed. Thanks for the remonder…

Huh? I have blo.gs and weblogs.com both checked in my MT config as well as rpc.pingomatic.com which I added after Sidesh0w made a similar comment. My RSS feed is always accurate.

Are you sure it’s not the fact that I just don’t post that often? ;)

Here’s the blo.gs listing for CollyLogic. Note the old ones (which you are most likely still subscribed to) and the new ones at the top. I have emailed them to remove the old duplicates. What a productive day I’m having today…

Ok, so maybe blo.gs is buggy as hell? Me thinks I’ll give bloglines a serious try… I just don’t like viewing posts in plain text form (especially when there’s so many awesome designs in my subscriptions!)

Colly: Cheers mate, I’ve updated my subscription :)

Shaun: Perhaps, but I know you’ve posted since June ‘04! Besides, I welcome all challengers to the ‘irregular posting’ title ;) In fact, I missed last month entirely! Bah :|

Jan: Shit man, your new design rocks! How ’bout a bit of english posting, eh? ;)

other than remote hosting, i’m not sure i see the advantage over just using a feed aggregator - you can just click through from there.

i’ve noticed a lot of these ping-based services seem a bit patchy.

I read my RSS feeds in Thunderbird, which gives you the choice of reading styled or un-styled content. I thought most news aggregators did the same thing. I don’t miss out on updates, and I still get the design if I want it. Which to be honest I find is less and less important, but that’s just me.

Hey! What’s with the me bashing!? :0]

I actually use Ping-o-matic religiously, so all services on there should be hunky dory.

It might be the fact that my weblog now runs off www.themaninblue.com/writing/, whereas in a former epoch I just used www.themaninblue.com/.

You’re an Aussie; haven’t you heard of ‘tall poppy syndrome’? :p

Yep, you were double listed too. I hope blo.gs’ grand pubah is aware of this double listing madness!

    LOL :D thanks mate…

I’m workin’ on it. It’s not fun - work, school, now playing with personal site and hacking WP to work the way I want, preparing CZ articles… Lately I was conquered by the biggest CZ web design mag, so I’ll have to write something for them once in a while etc. … But I definitely want to write EN articles, I’ll just need some time to let all the things settle down… (and prepare bi-lang WP hack :D)

Just catch me at some time on IM ;)

BTW Andrew, I prefer using Opera8 on Win or Safari2 on Mac for RSS… It’s really straightforward.

I suck at “web design", but thanks to your “site in an hour” tutorial on CSS, I think I will suck less". At least some of the blame has to go to trying to fudge with HTML and designing pages. We’ll see what happens :-)
