Westciv Template Competition

| November 3, 2004 | Category: Cascading Style

Westciv have just announced the results of their CSS template competition. While my entry didn’t take out any of the three categories it was entered in (’no-images’, ‘print’ and ‘handheld’) it did score me a free copy of their Style Master software! I knew I should have bought John a drink after the WSG meeting ;-). To be honest, I’ve never tried it; but if it increases my efficiency while creating new designs I’ll become a vocal supporter of their product. I’d like to take this opportunity to publicly thank John and Maxine and wish them all the best with the upcoming release of Style Master 4 — the fact that they are an Australian company pushing the uptake of standards is all the more reason for me to wish them success!

To be honest, I didn’t really like that template of yours… It just seems wrong… You should’ve done a design like mindlessLemming or LJ.

I also didn’t like the overall winner… It looks terrible on my computer… I like the other winners though…

That’s cool, but how do you expect me to make a design like either of those without using images? My entry was in the ‘text-only’ category and was something I whipped up just to have a play. Also, my main aim was to provide a template that made good use of column width control as an example to beginners who are ripping apart templates to see how they tick. You’re right though, I should have spent more time on the visual aspect.

The images part is a rather major disadvantage… And time is money, only in this case if you spend more time you might get $150 :p.

I also think the colours just don’t fit together well, the background with the beige (?) and brown, it just seems somewhat out… I don’t like the font spacing either, I find it more difficult to read a font like Arial with spacing like this…

The valid buttons also didn’t do well, they’re just to bigger contrast, but I do like how you’ve made them text not image…

Apart from that it’s nice, you’ve really done well to make a text template so dynamic, in the sense of :hovers.

Yeah, it’s not terribly sexy. Heh. I wasn’t terribly impressed by the winners either though. Was expecting like Zen-Garden level (though some of those are pretty awful too), but then again I don’t know what the contest’s constraints were either.

Wish I’d known about it… Would’ve been fun. Blarg. Congrats on the mention and the free software. Good squishy.

PS: Your comment preview still doesn’t like paragraphs ;) Try replacing \n\n with and then replace remaining \n with
    .

Paragraphs with the preview seem to work fine in Safari…
