Grass Covered Stapler?

| August 31, 2004 | Category: General

The most frequent question I’m asked regarding this site is “What’s the deal with the stapler?” . Friends, family and total strangers on the other side of the planet have given me flack about it.

So what’s the deal with the stapler?

[Ed.] Apologies for the recent divergence from topic, expect an on-topic post approx 12 hours after this one ;-).

Ok, here’s the deal with the stapler

The stapler is iconic of office workers, which is essentially what anyone who works at a computer is. Contrasting the bleak outlook of office life is a whole heap o’ happy green nature - something I was lucky enough to live in for my teenage years and appreciate every day. To me, the nature represents something I love — in this case art.
Are you with me so far? Let’s put it in programming terms for the developers in the audience.

stapler == work;
nature == art;

Mossy Stapler = Web Design

This is where it gets a bit ‘artsy’ — just a heads up. The moss growing over the stapler represents a combination of my love for art with my search for a career. The unison of the two in a balance of form and texture is a comment on my feelings about web design — that I can get the job done without my own creativity suffering; the very reason I chose not to pursue a career in music.

So there it is; let it never again be said that I was copying Steve. :-P

    I was also wondering about the stapler, it’s quite surreal. You should make a desktop image from it.

    I personally feel that more people should use staplers in their logos. :)

    By the way - great work with this live preview bit on posts - very slick.

    as a programmer, i take offence to the above reference where u felt the need to translate ur information about your stapler into what you call programing terms. Believe it or not, programmers do not need to have informaion translated into terms like stapler == work; nature == art;
    to be able to understand it. :-P

    also u need to do something about the scrolling.

    Scrolling == Good

    Too much scrolling == Bad

    The first time I saw this image I didn’t have a clue.

    How about you make the image link to this post?

    Timmy: Get off the booze :-P I knew that would stir you up! I’ve got a fluid layout in the making, unfortunately it can’t take priority over work. Low bandwidth, minimal scrolling - all for you.

    David: Hmm… I think if it was going to link somewhere it would have to be the homepage. Perhaps a small ? in one corner would be good.

    It could also be that the stapler is not in use so it is allowed to grow over.
